Extreme Heat in Prison Landscapes

Project Description

The mortality rate from heat waves is significantly greater for the incarcerated population compared to the nation. People who are incarcerated are especially vulnerable to extreme heat due to demographic characteristics and limited heat-intervention resources. Grassroots activists are interested in obtaining quantitative evidence of this disparity for policy advocacy and coalition building. This work uses satellite and other earth observation data to characterize internal and external temperatures that incarcerated people may be exposed to U.S. prison landscapes.
